If you rent movies, you have undoubtedly noticed a recent shift away from VHS tapes
and toward DVD's at your local store. Why is this happening? Because DVD's
are superior to tapes in many ways.
Quality
Movies on DVD's are stored digitally, and have a higher image quality. VHS gives about 250 vertical lines
of resolution, while DVD gives nearly 500 lines. DVD's also have a higher chroma bandwidth
than VHS tapes. What does all this mean? It means the images from DVD's are sharper,
have much more fine detail visible, have better color, and are less noisy (less “snow” in the
picture).
Durability
Unfortunately, with repeated viewings tapes wear out. Every time a tape is
played, a drum rotating at high speed contacts the delicate surface of the tape.
This will eventually cause parts of the tape's magnetic coating to flake off, or partial
erasure of the signals on the tape. In either case, the picture starts to
look more and more snowy, or may become completely unviewable in spots.
DVD's, on the other hand, use a laser to optically
“read” the disc. Since there is no physical contact with the surface, DVD's
should last forever (if handled and stored carefully).
Convenience
If you've ever played a DVD, you know how easy it is to find items of
interest using the menus, or to jump around using chapter points. Tapes, on
the other hand, require lots of searching to find what you want, and lots
of waiting for it to rewind.
